Today millions of people are immigrating to the United States from Mexico and they are bringing more problems than they are solutions. P.F. Wagner wrote a comprehensive report on the danger of illegal immigration and how it is affecting us as a nation called ?The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration?. Wagner is a political science professor for the University of Virginia. Post 9/11 America has done a good job cracking down on national security, but eight years later we are still getting attacked. It?s not a matter of terrorism but instead the well being of the United States. In the United States alone crime rates are dramatically higher among illegal immigrants than they are the legal citizens. In Los Angeles alone, 95% of some 1,500 outstanding warrants for homicides are for illegal aliens (Wagner, ?Crime?). California is one of the States that has been hit hard by illegal immigration via Mexico and with Los Angeles having a very high Hispanic population it has created problems for law enforcement (Wagner, ?Crime?). The Prioress of The Canterbury Tales    In the poem, by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer depicts the people of the church and describes them as people who are not the sole embodiment of people who have sworn themselves to God, and to live by the four vows that the church requires them to commit themselves to. The Prioress, a Nun, is no exception, but Chaucer does not directly say how she represents the four vows but rather it is what he does not say that leads people to believe the Prioress is the exact opposite of what is expected of a nun that has committed herself to the four vows.    Men and women of the church are expected to live in poverty and hold no worldly possessions. The Prioress spoke of owning little dogs, which is strictly prohibited in a convent, and treating them exceptionally well and being extremely attached to them. By owing these dogs she violated the vow of poverty but the most apparent item that she owns is a gold broche that and leads the reader to believe that she was not entirely devoted to the church.    Chaucer spent a great deal of time explaining how she was extremely obsessed with her etiquette, that hints to the reader that she is more suited to be a beloved lady rather than a nun. In the days of Chaucer, women used excellent etiquette to attract and keep lovers. This indicates that the Prioress in not completely faithful to her vow of chastity, but rather a woman of promiscuity.    The vow of obedience, in reference to the Prioress, is probably the most odd vow of the four, since he never mentions it. While Chaucer is describing the Prioress he never once mentions how she serves God or nothing of that sort. This leaves the reader wondering if she serves God well or does not, but it is obvious that she has failed to follow the other vows and that this one is no exception.    A nun should pray, study, do service to God, and live a confined life free from temptation, but the Prioress has already violated the first three vows and those have to be followed to successful fulfill the vow of obedience.

From Loathing to Confidence: I Made It! I hate English classes. This has always been my attitude, always negative. In my mind English and writing have always been my worst subjects. I think the combination of struggling and having pressure to get good grades ruined writing for me. I am not sure where my hatred started whether it was from yelling matches with my mom at two in the morning as she edited yet another draft and pointed out mistakes or if it was because I never learned correct mechanics and therefore always struggled. Most students learn commas, run togethers, and passive voice around middle school; well I learned how to copy the answers from the board as my teacher wrote them. From this point on I hated having to write because I knew I would make mistakes that I did not understand. With that background, my plan as I walked into the library in January was to make it through and to work as hard as I had to just to survive. The first month was just that, hanging on. Then the weirdest thing, as you assigned grammar worksheets I started to learn what I should have learned in seventh grade. It changed my perspective, of course I still had to work hard and revise my papers, but for the first time I was able to catch mistakes in my papers. I grew so much as a writer this semester; I am now at the point where I do not mind writing anymore, and I actually enjoy it sometimes. It just proves how important fundamentals can be.
